Heuchera ‘Fire Chief’, also known as Coral Bells, is a delightful perennial plant with striking scarlet foliage and continuous blooms. Here are some key features:
- Foliage: The lobed, rounded, mid-sized leaves emerge glowing wine red in spring, then mature to deeper crimson shades in summer and fall before slightly browning out in winter.
- Flowers: In spring, summer, and fall, open panicles of small, bell-shaped, bicolored pink and white flowers bloom repeatedly on dark red stems, rising up to 18 inches (45 cm) above the semi-evergreen foliage.
- Tolerance: ‘Fire Chief’ is bred for heat and humidity tolerance. It’s also prized by gardeners for its drought tolerance and good resistance to powdery mildew.
- Growth Habit: This clump-forming perennial forms basal mounds, reaching up to 8 inches (20 cm) tall with a spread of 15 inches (37 cm).
- Growing Conditions: It performs best in part shade, in rich, humusy, medium-moisture, well-drained soils. If grown in full sun, ensure the soil remains consistently moist to prevent foliage decline. It also thrives in dry shade once established.
- Landscape Use: Ideal for beds, borders, rock gardens, woodland gardens, and as groundcover or edging along paths. It’s fabulous when planted in groups!
- Maintenance: Divide clumps every 3-4 years in spring. Remove faded flower stems to promote additional bloom. Apply winter mulch after the ground freezes to prevent root heaving.
- Wildlife Attraction: Attractive to butterflies and often ignored by deer.
*Please Note: Some soil may be removed, and the plant may be trimmed before shipping.
